When your key becomes lodged in the ignition switch and won’t come out, your options are limited to either calling a company to come get it out or dislodge the key yourself. Do not panic. If you can turn the key and start your engine, drive back to your home if you are not already there. That way you will have more choices for what to do and you know that you are in a safe area and place to deal with the situation. If you are in a location that seems safe and secure, proceed to try and get your key out of the ignition. The Phoenix Locksmith Pros suggest that you always call a professional before trying to fix the ignition yourself as you can cause more damage to the ignition switch.

Car Key-Stuck-in-IgnitionTo try and get the key out of the ignition, take one hand and turn the steering wheel from side to side. With your other hand, try to jiggle the key and twist it free. Twisting the steering wheel with one hand, you can try to turn the car off and throw it out of alignment. If that doesn’t work, try to put a thin hacksaw blade and insert it into the key slot. Have the teeth pointing toward you and jiggle the hacksaw blade while wiggling the key. The hacksaw may get the key and dislodge it from what it’s caught on.

If that doesn’t work, a lubricant might help. Spraying some cooking spray or WD-40 into the ignition and wiggling the key may help to free it. Don’t jiggle it too hard at the risk of breaking it and attempt to pull it out. If that doesn’t work, you can try using a screwdriver. With this you can take the body around the ignition apart and try to loosen up the locking pin. Then push the key out from the opposite side. You have successfully gotten your key out of the ignition!
